TOURISM DATA FOR THE SKANEATELES AREA

 Skaneateles Tourism Data

All data estimates are based on random counts during events held in the Skaneateles area.

  • It is estimated the population in Skaneateles doubles during the summer months of July and August.  This is due to residents who travel to Florida and return to spend their summers in Skaneateles, and those who rent cottages here all summer long.
  • The Friday night community band concerts by the lake bring in between 1,000 and 1,500 people each week during the months of July and August.  Big asset to the restaurant business -- particularly casual dining places.
  • The Antique and Classic Boat Show has been in Skaneateles since 1995 and brings 10,000-12,000 visitors annually, the last weekend in July.  Restaurants, lodging, and shopping businesses benefit greatly.
  • Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles runs for the four weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  This event draws more people every year since it started in 1994.  Visitors are estimated at 5,000 each weekend during Dickens.  It is a big economic boom to the retail, lodging and restaurant business.
  • The Merchants Annual Curbstone Festival (sidewalk sale) is a three-day event the third weekend in July.  Crowds are estimated at 10,000 or more over the three-day period.  Retail and restaurants benefit greatly.
  • The Skaneateles Festival draws 7,000 visitors and residents to its Chamber music concerts during the month of August.  The Festival draws world famous musicians to perform in Skaneateles.  Overnight visitors as well as day trippers, and residents attend.
  • Mid-Lakes Navigation boat cruises are one of our biggest attractions.  They cater to the leisure traveler, residents, and bus tours.
  • Skaneateles now has its own winery, Anyela’s Vineyards.  Anyela’s is a premiere attraction, and has added greatly to the visitor experience in Skaneateles.
  • Welch Allyn Company is Skaneateles’ largest employer and greatly adds to the economic prosperity of the area.  Aside from employing a large number of residents, they use over 30 room nights on a daily basis, have a great many dinners and meetings in our local restaurants, and their visitors, customers and sales people shop in our stores.
  • Various weekends throughout the winter can be busy with hockey tournaments and ice skating shows, and swim meets throughout the year, at the Austin Park Pavilion and Skaneateles Community Center.
  • Many other events are held throughout the summer and the rest of the year which bring thousands of visitors to our streets.  These events include:  the Rotary Pancake Breakfast on Father’s Day (4,000 people),  the Antique and Craft Show and Sale (several thousand), the Library Book Sale (1,000), the Garden Club Home Tour (bi-annual event), Sunday afternoon Polo Games in July and August, the Fall Festival (1,000+ people);Skaneateles Summer Theatre (1st weekend in August),  Skan Races (Labor Day Weekend), and the Thumbstall Quilt Show in October, and the Skaneateles Winterfest (last Saturday in January.)
  • Other events in the Syracuse & Auburn area also bring large crowds to Skaneateles such as: Syracuse University and Cornell graduation, homecomings and parents’ weekends, conventions such as the Syracuse Nationals, the Fire Chiefs and Dirt Racing Week, and of course, the Great NYS Fair.
