“The Agitators” Specialty Tours

Based on Dorothy Wickenden’s “The Agitators,” Seward House Museum staff lead expanded specialty tours that dive into the life of Frances Seward as well as her powerful friendships with Harriet Tubman and Martha Coffin Wright. Admission: $10 Members, $15 Non-Members.

Derby Hill Field Trip and Stewardship Project with Baltimore Woods

In a single day, hundreds and sometimes thousands of raptors and other birds may pass Derby Hill Bird Observatory on their way north along the shore of Lake Ontario. Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel at Derby Hill to learn about these birds’ journeys, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. For the second part of the trip, we will look for birds among the hedgerows and do some optional trail work to help maintain the habitat and trail accessibility here.
More details: This program is designed for adults. We will plan to go for a walk on moderate terrain around the hedgerows for the second part of the program. If parking at the base of the hill is required due to mud, the hike to the top is more difficult but car rides to the top in the Baltimore Woods vehicle can be accommodated. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required.

Earth Day Stewardship Project 2024

Be a part of the annual Baltimore Woods restoration project to celebrate Earth Day! Join the Baltimore Woods Nature Center Stewardship Team to plant ~200 new shrubs to restore a secondary forest within a restoration fence. While the project will start at 9am, you can feel free to arrive anytime during the work session and stay for some or all of the time.
This event has projects for all ages! Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Be sure to bring enough water, closed toed shoes, and tick deterrent of your choice. Dress accordingly, as you will be working in muddy conditions. Parking directions will be emailed in advance of the work project.

Celebrate Earth with Baltimore Woods Nature Center and learn the many ways you can connect with nature in 2024! Look for pollinators, use a microscope to see nature in a whole new way, become a bird in the migration obstacle challenge, be a citizen scientist, meet people from nature and conservation-based organizations around Central New York and learn how you can get involved. The international Earth Day theme for 2024 is Planet vs. Plastic. As part of our celebration this year, we’ll help you understand how plastic impacts our planet’s health, and how you can rethink your own use of plastics in your daily life. If all of the demonstrations, games, information stations, and hands-on activities still aren’t enough for you, come along on a guided bird or wildflower hike to see the spring life return. There are so many things you can do to keep nature a part of your life every day no matter where you are.
More details: The Earth Day Celebration is free for everyone, although space is limited. This program is designed for ages 3 and up. Pre-registration is required. Registration for hikes will be at the event check-in table on Saturday.
The Earth Day stewardship project will be held 9am-noon with a separate pre-registration signup.

Jon Rudnitsky is an American actor and comedian. First breaking through as a performer with the Los Angeles comedy troupe The Groundlings, Rudnitsky garnered widespread attention for his brief stint as a cast member on the NBC Sketch Comedy series Saturday Night Live during the show's 41st season between 2015 and 2016. Since his departure from SNL, he has also played McWatt in the 2019 miniseries Catch-22.

“Our Domestic Enemy”: How Seward Helped End Confederate Commemoration

Yale scholar Connor Williams will discuss his in-progress book on William Seward, “Our Domestic Enemy,” which outlines how Seward perceived the Confederacy during his pre and post Civil War tenure as Secretary of State. Williams will also share from his recent work as Lead Historian for The Naming Commission of the Department of Defense, a body tasked with modern day issues of commemoration and public memory. This event will take place at the Equal Rights Heritage Center.

Symphoria welcomes back Monica Fosnaugh, English horn player from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, to join principal trumpet John Raschella in a performance of Copland’s Quiet City. The work is bookended by Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony at the start and Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D Major to complete the afternoon.
