Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: Warblers and Amazing Neotropical Migrants
8:30 AM to 2:00 PM Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: Warblers and Amazing Neotropical Migrants5/25/2024 8:30 AM to 2:00 PMBaltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus, but instead, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature, including birds, butterflies, trees, flowers, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity, sit-spots and self-reflection, journaling and exploration, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors. This is the fourth of 6 sessions which will be focused on “Warblers and our amazing neotropical migrants from Central and South America” at Bear Swamp State Forest along the south end of Skaneateles Lake. More Details: This program is designed for ages 18 and up. Space is limited, online registration is required. Brentano String Quartet
7:30 PM Brentano String Quartet5/30/2024 7:30 PMGeneva Music Festival 2024 Season: Light and Dark Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin, violins; Haydn String Quartet Op. 33 No. 5 Join the Brentano Quartet, hailed by the New York Times for their “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism” for a special concert celebrating musical contrasts. Revel in Joseph Haydn’s genial and energetic String Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5, which overwhelmingly brings warmth and light to mind. Darkness descends in the String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich; its dedication (“In memory of the victims of fascism and war”), somber, sometimes grating harmonies, and musical allusions (incorporating, for instance, “Dies irae” from the Catholic requiem mass) capture the pain and sorrow felt by its composer. Hope dawns, though, and brightness reigns in Felix Mendelssohn’s spirited String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1. All programs subject to change. War and Peace (May 31)
7:30 PM War and Peace (May 31)5/31/2024 7:30 PMGeneva Music Festival 2024 Season: Light and Dark Geoffrey Herd and Blake Pouliot, violin; Beethoven Op. 76, “Harp” Music making can be a balm, offering respite among sorrow and strife, and giving artists a way of expressing their pain or reacting to their circumstances. In music, composers may celebrate victories, lament the loss of friends, or find the metaphorical harmony and peace that eludes the larger world. Join resident GMF artists for an exploration of three composers whose lives and works were shaped by their experience of conflict. Written during the Napoleonic wars, Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet is a sparkling, lyrical reminder of joy, while Shostakovich’s Piano Trio, written as a memorial and replete with a danse macabre, dwells upon the tragic. Georges Antoine’s Piano Quartet, emerging from the trenches of World War I, is a passionate testament to a musical career cut short. All programs subject to change. From romantic passion to intense hatred, music is not only often inspired by, but also can elicit profound emotions. Robert Schumann’s Quartet in A Major, which opens with a sighing “Clara” motive in homage to his beloved bride, captures the composer’s affection, but also his extreme volatility. The soaring melodies of Reena Esmail’s Saans were composed as a wedding present for a friend—a celebration of love, but also testament to the deep relationship between friends. César Franck’s explosive Piano Quintet is a tumultuous expression of a range of emotions, which inspired not only numerous tales about the genesis and effect of the work, but also holds the listener in its impassioned thrall.

Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: Warblers and Amazing Neotropical Migrants
5/25/2024 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM
Baltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024.
To learn more about the overall program and guide Matt Young, visit baltimorewoods.org/nourishing-ourselves-through-nature/

Haydn String Quartet Op. 33 No. 5
Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8
Mendelssohn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44/1
Join the Brentano Quartet, hailed by the New York Times for their “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism” for a special concert celebrating musical contrasts. 44, No. 1.

Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2
Georges Antoines Piano Quartet
Music making can be a balm, offering respite among sorrow and strife, and giving artists a way of expressing their pain or reacting to their circumstances.
