Beyond the Surface: Contemporary Artists and Printed Textiles features more than 75 works by a diverse group of eight American artists who challenge conventional expectations of printed textiles within contemporary art. Using various techniques and materials, these artists transform fabric-based prints into meditations on personal, political, and social conditions. Participating artists are Danielle Andress, Nancy Crow, Emily Dormier, Sarah Fairchild, Letitia Huckaby, Krystle Lemonias, Stephanie Santana, and Gerri Spilka.
The exhibition is curated by Caroline Kipp and sponsored by the Coby Foundation, Furthermore Foundation – a program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, Nelson B. Delevan Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
DATES: Aug. 31 to Oct. 20, 2024
OPENING: Curator Caroline Kipp will lead a roundtable discussion at 3 p.m. Aug. 31, followed by an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Art After School: See What You Can Sew! Machine Sewing and Printed Textiles at the Schweinfurth

Join instructor Katrina Marie Overton for a 6-week series of all things fiber in this Art After School program! Students will use sewing machines, learn different stitching techniques, and even get to design their own fabrics. Projects include pillowcases, lined tote bags, block printing on fabric, and a collaborative quilt project.

What if famous writers and activists from the 1800's met for a conference about the future of America? What would they say?

Join us at Auburn Public Theater for a meet and greet with the author who answers these questions, Tom Piazza, and a staged reading of excerpts from his insightful book: "The Auburn Conference".
It is 1883, and America is at a crossroads. At a tiny college in Upstate New York, an idealistic young professor has managed to convince Mark Twain, Frederick Douglass, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Confederate memoirist Forrest Taylor, and romance novelist Lucy Comstock to participate in the first (and last) Auburn Writers’ Conference for a public discussion about the future of the nation. By turns brilliantly comic and startlingly prescient, The Auburn Conference vibrates with questions as alive and urgent today as they were in 1883—the chronic American conundrums of race, class, and gender, and the fate of the democratic ideal.

They will learn centering, basic throwing techniques, trimming, glazing, and more to begin their journey with clay. Have you heard of Peanut Hill or Harrison’s Hideaway? Campers at Baltimore Woods spend their days exploring secret spots of their own beyond the marked trails. If you’ve ever wanted to see Baltimore Woods through a child’s eyes, now’s your chance! During this program, we’ll take a behind-the-scenes tour of the places where campers play, explore, develop, and make lifelong connections to nature. Join us to see what makes these places so special and rediscover your inner child!

More details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will follow our most difficult trails, which have narrow and steep sections with steps, roots, and loose soil. This program will also go offtrail, which has a natural, unmaintained surface. The surfaces may be muddy. Our total route will be about 2 miles.

Painting Fall Leaves with Watercolors at Baltimore Woods

Experience the joy of fall colors by making fun art outside! Let’s go for an adventure to search for scarlet, gold, orange, purple, and brown leaves on the forest floor. We’ll bring what we find to the beaver meadow along the Harrison Trail and sit on logs to paint the fall colors. All painting materials will be provided.

More details: This program is designed for ages 5 and up. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will include a leisurely walk up and down a relatively steep trail that has some roots, loose soil, and wet spots.
