Montezuma Field Trip

Montezuma Field Trip

11/08/2024 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

As fall transitions towards winter, a grand spectacle of bird migration is unfolding and the Montezuma Wetlands Complex is one of the best places in North America to see it. As we tour the most active parts of Montezuma to watch geese, ducks, shorebirds, and more, we’ll discover the stories of how they can travel so far. We’ll also learn how the history of human interactions with the wetlands have given birds a wing up.

More details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will involve traveling to various sites by car. We will mostly be doing stationary birding and a radio tour by car along the wildlife drive. We may visit an observation tower that includes stairs. Meet at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge visitor center at 10 am. Binoculars will be provided for those that need them. Dress warmly.

A Water-shaped Landscape

11/16/2024 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

Through weathering, erosion, freezing, and thawing, water has carved and shaped the landscapes of Baltimore Woods and the rest of the world. Through a guided hike, we will explore the clues to how the land in our area was formed, how it will continue to change, and why it matters to the generations of people that have and will call Marcellus “home.” Join us to discover features of The Woods that exist because of this powerful force.

This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will follow our most difficult trails, which have narrow and steep sections with steps, roots, and loose soil. The surfaces may be muddy. Our total route will be about 1.5 miles

Star Party: Leonid Meteor Shower with Baltimore Woods

11/17/2024 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM

Cultures across the world and throughout time are united in a fascination with the night sky. Humans have used stars to mark the passage of time, tell stories, build mythologies, and navigate across vast dark oceans. With powerful telescopes and a wealth of knowledge, Bob Piekiel is your tour guide to the stars and planets, revealing the secrets of the far away, inspiring us to think about how special our little green and blue ball in space is. This is the famous Leonid meteor shower, which can be highly unpredictable. We will also be able to see Venus and Saturn, and maybe catch a glimpse of Mercury.

This program is offered for free thanks to our Star Party Program Sponsor, Marcellus Smiles. This program is designed for ages 8 and up. Space is limited and online pre-registration is required.

Book Talk & Signing: "Shellback" with Author Karen Hempson at NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center

11/20/2024 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM

Join author Karen Foresti Hempson as she presents her latest work, Shellback. The first half of this young adult historical fiction takes place in Upstate New York during the twentieth century. The story focuses on a young boy named Francis (or“Fudz”), a child of Italian immigrant parents, who struggles through hard times of the Great Depression, and Prohibition. His goal is to “get outta here” and escape poverty. The second half traces his journey as a young sailor through World War II Pacific battles. Fictitious characters and events are based on true-to-life individuals and happenings.

This presentation will include a special look at artifacts relating to the Pacific Theater of WWII from the author’s personal collection and the collection of the Cayuga Museum of History and Art. The book talk will begin at 6:30 PM at the Equal Rights Heritage Center at 25 South St. on Wednesday, November 20. Admission is free, though donations will be greatly appreciated. Copies of Shellback will be available to purchase, and the author will remain onsite to sign books following the presentation. Campfire Pumpkins at Baltimore Woods

11/22/2024 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Cooking over a fire connects us with our ancestors in a very tasty way! Using traditional campfire cooking methods like roasting, coal stacking, and cast iron we’ll cook up some pumpkins just like people would have done 250 years ago. While the pumpkins are roasting, we’ll learn about the history of Marcellus and Baltimore Woods, ponder how life was different back then, and how we can still see evidence of their lifestyles on the landscape today. Then we’ll eat!

More details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will take place outside of our log cabin on flat grass with benches and picnic tables.

Celebrate the Four Seasons with Music of Nature & Wonder at Baltimore Woods

Celebrate the Four Seasons with Music of Nature & Wonder at Baltimore Woods

11/30/2024 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Through time, the sounds of nature have inspired wonderful musical, poetic, and artistic dreams all around the world: from rushing waterfalls, to gentle drops of rain and melting icicles….to birdsong and crickets…and so much more.

Drawing upon the diverse sounds of nature throughout the four seasons, Bells & Motley are excited to bring audiences on a musical journey using a gamut of historical instruments for a good measure of surprise: A beautiful introduction to the evocative connection between music and nature.

This concert will feature historic instruments and music to highlight a collection of meaningful traditions from different cultures. Our Baltimore Woods Nature Center setting, surrounded by forest, will bring us to especially focus on the connection of music and wonder. Music will be played from 2-3pm and musicians will be available to answer questions and learn more about the instruments.

More details: This program is for all ages and is made possible through the CNY Arts Grants for Regional Arts and Cultural Engagement regrant program thanks to a New York State Senate Initiative supported by the NYS Legislature, the Office of the Governor and administered by the New York State Council on the Arts.

Traditional Ukrainian Embroidery Workshop

11/17/2024 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

This workshop offers the opportunity for confident beginners and experienced artists to explore Ukrainian traditional embroidery. Participants will be provided with the chance to learn the basics of diagonal lyshtva and shtapivka embroidery, including stitches, tips, and techniques while working on a red and black star design. The project will be framed in a wooden hoop, providing a neat and simple way to display the artwork as an element of décor. All materials will be provided by the instructor.

Note: Although for this project we use a larger count embroidery fabric (14 Aida), some people may benefit from using a magnifying glass/lamp. The participants are encouraged to bring their own device if needed.

Location and accessibility information: The workshop will be held in the Cayuga Museum’s main gallery. The museum is finishing a construction project and parking will only be available on Genesee Street, and the museum must be accessed through the front door which is at the top of a flight of stairs.
