Mike Powell

10/18/2019 8:00 PM

With a vintage voice and a chest full of hauntingly heartfelt songs, prolific storyteller Mike Powell is the underground messenger of blue-collar soul. His comfort behind a microphone and unique brand of atomic folk creates a vibe that warms the room like a long ago fire burning hot inside a cabin in the woods. In 2004, Powell left Syracuse University as the most decorated lacrosse player in history but declined offers to play professionally so that he could focus fully on the craft of songwriting. Over the past fifteen years he’s written over two hundred songs, released seven albums and has toured the country playing shows with Martin Sexton, David Lindley, Shooter Jennings, Sarah Lee Guthrie & many more. His duo format features his best friend, multi-instrumentalist and musical companion for over 15 years, John William Hanus III. With the looseness of the solo show but with beautifully thoughtful landscapes created by sonic wizard Hanus III it truly adds another dimension to the palette and adds color to the pictures. Powell also fronts a five piece rock n’ roll band called The Black River that is designed for dancing and geared for grooving. Powell with The Black River has been described by fans as “Little Feat meets John Prine”.

An Unhealthy History?: Dr. Theodore Dimon and the Rise of Victorian Medicine

10/23/2019 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Back by popular demand! Yale Professor of Pathology Dr. Gustave Davis returns to Auburn to discuss the fascinating—and occasionally gruesome medical history—of the Seward family, and of Auburn in general, in the middle 19th century. Davis will do this through the story of Doctor Theodore Dimon, Seward’s doctor, personal friend, and one of his few contemporaries with a life story to match his own. Dimon was an original 49er, Republican stalwart, Civil War diarist, Superintendent of the Auburn Prison, and creator of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. He was also a medical pioneer in Central New York whose practice in Auburn left a deep mark in this community.

Gustave Davis is a Clinical Professor of Pathology at the Yale University Medical School. Like Mr. Seward, Dr. Davis is an alum of Union College and has conducted extensive research on Seward’s legacy as well as the untold biography of Dimon.

10/23 from 7:00-8:00 PM at the Carriage House Theater. Admission is $10 for members of the Seward House Museum or the Cayuga Museum of History and Art, $15 for members of the public. Space is limited. Reservations are recommended and open on Tuesday, 9/17.

Shawn Mullins

10/29/2019 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM

An American singer-songwriter who specializes in folk rock, instrumental rock, adult alternative, and Americana music, in solo concert at APT. After a series of indie record releases, Shawn Mullins’ critical breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core album shot to fame due to the strength of Grammy-nominated hit, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin Parlor. His song, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. He co-wrote “All in My Head” which was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” Mullins also co- wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” For the 20th anniversary of Soul’s Core, Shawn is revisiting the music by recording two new versions of the album, Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs.

Showtimes are 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Presale tickets are $15 for admission only, and $35 for admission and an audience participation kit. Tickets at the door are $20 for admission only, and $40 for admission and an audience participation kit. Starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a sci-fi-comedy-horror-B-movie cult classic. The oversexed characters, campy performances, and electric score turned this 1975 film, which was originally panned by critics, into the world’s most famous midnight movie. Attendees will enjoy singing along to all the raunchy rock hits they know and love, including Sweet Transvestite, The Time Warp, Hot Patootie—Bless My Soul, and Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me. The film pioneered an audience participation movement that has become a staple at screenings worldwide. Fans are invited to show up dressed to impress in their favorite freakish attire for the costume contests that will follow both screenings.
