Literature & Nature Book Group at Baltimore Woods

11/01/2025 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Calling all nature-loving bookworms! The Literature & Nature Book Group at Baltimore Woods welcomes you to nourish and enhance your appreciation of the natural world with ongoing friendly discussions of great writing on that theme. Open to all interested adult members of the community, we will meet at the Interpretive Center (or outside if weather permits) one Saturday a month to delve into a reading of fiction or creative nonfiction chosen by participants. Our next meeting will take place on November 1 from 10:30 AM to Noon when we will be discussing Is a River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane.

Registration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday, October 29.

Discussion leader Todd Stregiel is thrilled to have an opportunity to join with others in the community by bringing together two of his abiding passions— reading good books and appreciating nature's wonders. He is a Skaneateles native with a dedication to lifelong learning having made a career as a teacher in alternative and adult education settings. Todd's wide range of interests include history, philosophy, nature photography, camping, and singing in a community choir.

Studio Schweinfurth: Pastel Painting Studio: Focus on Still Life
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Studio Schweinfurth: Pastel Painting Studio: Focus on Still Life

11/08/2025 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Still life painting has been around since images of foods were painted on the walls of Egyptian tombs to give the dead something to eat in the afterlife. Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and Fauvists used still life subjects as an opportunity to play with paint-handling, color, and composition. We will do precisely that as we paint from colorful arrangements based on actual still lifes by 19th and 20th century masters. Pastel is intensely colorful and can be applied in a myriad of ways, from a fine line to a broad passage of color. This workshop is an opportunity for you to receive individualized instruction in the pastel medium.

Skaneateles Historical Society Lecture Series - "Freedom For All: Civil Resistance and the fight against slavery in Antebellum Syracuse"

11/18/2025 2:00 PM

Presented by Robert J. Searing M.A; M.Phil, Curator, Onondaga Historical Association. This presentation examines the work of a small but dedicated group of abolitionists in Syracuse New York, led by Rev. Samuel May and Rev. Jermain Loguen. Loguen, a man who escaped his own enslavement in Tennessee and settled in Syracuse in 1841, became one
of the era's most successful and well-known Station Masters on the UGRR. These men and their
compatriots helped make Syracuse a center for abolitionist activity and organization and were
primary participants in of the era’s most significant acts of civil disobedience; the Jerry Rescue, in
October 1851. Additionally, the talk will place the efforts of local reformers in the large national
context of the growing sectional controversies over slavery, which ultimately resulted in the Civil
War in 1861. It ends with a discussion of the National Convention of Colored Men, which met in
Syracuse in October 1864.

Access to Green Space

11/06/2025 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Baltimore Woods is hosting a forum where you can listen, ask questions, and learn about navigating barriers people face to the outdoors. Access to nature and nature education varies around the country. While some grow up with the influence of nature and all its benefits, others do not have the same opportunities. We’ll talk with professionals about their experiences identifying and addressing access barriers and what they think a future with inclusive access to nature and nature education looks like.

More details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will take place inside the John A. Weeks Interpretive Center.

Montezuma Field Trip

11/07/2025 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

As fall transitions towards winter, a grand spectacle of bird migration is unfolding and the Montezuma Wetlands Complex is one of the best places in North America to see it. As we tour the most active parts of Montezuma to watch geese, ducks, shorebirds, and more, we’ll discover the stories of how they can travel so far. We’ll also learn how the history of human interactions with the wetlands have given birds a wing up.

More details: This program is designed for adults and older children. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will involve traveling to various sites by car. We will mostly be doing stationary birding and a radio tour by car along the wildlife drive. We may visit an observation tower that includes stairs. Meet at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge visitor center at 10am. Binoculars will be provided for those that need them. Dress warmly.
