From Jail to Redemption Transforming Lives Behind Bars

5/16/2024 7:00 PM

Thursday, May 16 at 7pm St. James’ Presents
“From Jail to Redemption: Transforming Lives Behind Bars,” discussion featuring Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck and Randy Smith, peer recovery advocate for Nick’s Ride 4 Friends in Auburn. The discussion is free and open to the public and is hosted by the St. James’ Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission.
An estimated 1.9 million people are incarcerated in prisons and jails across the United States. Sheriff Schenck will discuss new, restorative programs at the Cayuga County Jail designed to enable a smoother transition into the community for people who are incarcerated. The programs include teaching people problem-solving skills, as well as establishing community partnerships to provide treatment for addiction and other mental illnesses inside the jail that continue when individuals are released. The goal is to reduce and/or prevent people from returning to jail.
Sheriff Schenck has been the Cayuga County Sheriff since 2019. He began his law enforcement career in 1997 as a deputy sheriff in Cayuga County. His law enforcement career includes more than16 years as a detective/investigator and as supervisor of the detective and violent crimes unit in the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
Mr. Smith leads group sessions for those who are incarcerated and struggling with addiction. Nick’s Ride 4 Friends is a nonprofit organization committed to fighting substance abuse disorders by providing peer-based recovery services and resources for those who struggle with addiction. The organization’s drop-in-center is located at 13 Chapel St. and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m Mondays through Fridays.
In addition to his role as a peer recovery advocate for Nick’s Ride, Mr. Smith leads Combat Recovery, a boxing and mixed martial arts gym in the basement of the drop-in-center, where he shares his experiences as a fighter.

A Journey Through Strings and Stories

Tsukamoto brings a blend of masterful fingerstyle guitar and evocative storytelling that transcends cultural barriers. His artistry, honed at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, has been celebrated on renowned stages like the Blue Note in NYC and the United Nations, and lauded for its “delicate, fluid, and beautifully detailed” style by Acoustic Guitar magazine.

Tsukamoto’s concerts are not just musical events; they are immersive experiences that weave lyrical narratives with intricate melodies. Recognized for his soulful performances that create an orchestra at his fingertips, he invites audiences into his world of musical exploration and emotional expression. This is a rare opportunity to witness a performer who has been celebrated for his ability to take listeners on an “impressionistic journey” (Boston Herald). Enchanting music that promises to resonate long after the final note is played.

Join us for a guided hike to see the success of this stewardship, and learn what you can do to help the pollinators in your community.

More details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited and online pre-registration is required. This program will go off-trail, which has a natural, unmaintained surface. There may be roots and loose soil over relatively flat terrain. Muddy surfaces are possible this time of year. Our total route will be about 0.5 miles.

Robert Schumann’s Quartet in A Major, which opens with a sighing “Clara” motive in homage to his beloved bride, captures the composer’s affection, but also his extreme volatility. The soaring melodies of Reena Esmail’s Saans were composed as a wedding present for a friend—a celebration of love, but also testament to the deep relationship between friends. César Franck’s explosive Piano Quintet is a tumultuous expression of a range of emotions, which inspired not only numerous tales about the genesis and effect of the work, but also holds the listener in its impassioned thrall.

Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: Warblers and Amazing Neotropical Migrants

5/25/2024 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Baltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus, but instead, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature, including birds, butterflies, trees, flowers, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity, sit-spots and self-reflection, journaling and exploration, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors.

This is the fourth of 6 sessions which will be focused on “Warblers and our amazing neotropical migrants from Central and South America” at Bear Swamp State Forest along the south end of Skaneateles Lake.

More Details: This program is designed for ages 18 and up. Space is limited, online registration is required. To learn more about the overall program and guide Matt Young, visit baltimorewoods.org/nourishing-ourselves-through-nature/

Haydn String Quartet Op. 33 No. 5
Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8
Mendelssohn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44/1

Join the Brentano Quartet, hailed by the New York Times for their “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism” for a special concert celebrating musical contrasts. Revel in Joseph Haydn’s genial and energetic String Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5, which overwhelmingly brings warmth and light to mind. Darkness descends in the String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich; its dedication (“In memory of the victims of fascism and war”), somber, sometimes grating harmonies, and musical allusions (incorporating, for instance, “Dies irae” from the Catholic requiem mass) capture the pain and sorrow felt by its composer. Hope dawns, though, and brightness reigns in Felix Mendelssohn’s spirited String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1.

Beethoven Op. 76, “Harp”
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2
Georges Antoines Piano Quartet

Music making can be a balm, offering respite among sorrow and strife, and giving artists a way of expressing their pain or reacting to their circumstances. In music, composers may celebrate victories, lament the loss of friends, or find the metaphorical harmony and peace that eludes the larger world. Join resident GMF artists for an exploration of three composers whose lives and works were shaped by their experience of conflict. Written during the Napoleonic wars, Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet is a sparkling, lyrical reminder of joy, while Shostakovich’s Piano Trio, written as a memorial and replete with a danse macabre, dwells upon the tragic. Georges Antoine’s Piano Quartet, emerging from the trenches of World War I, is a passionate testament to a musical career cut short.

The discussion is free and open to the public and is hosted by the St. James’ Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission.
An estimated 1.9 million people are incarcerated in prisons and jails across the United States.

5/18/2024 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Schumann A Major String Quartet, Op. 41 No. 3
Reena Esmail Saans
Suk Love Song
Franck Piano Quintet

From romantic passion to intense hatred, music is not only often inspired by, but also can elicit profound emotions.
