Star Party: Hello Spring Skies

5/03/2024 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM

Cultures across the world and throughout time are united in a fascination with the night sky. Humans have used stars to mark the passage of time, tell stories, build mythologies, and navigate across vast dark oceans. With powerful telescopes and a wealth of knowledge, Bob Piekiel is your tour guide to the stars and planets, revealing the secrets of the far away, inspiring us to think about how special our little green and blue ball in space is. Even though no planets will be visible, we can still say hello to spring constellations and hopefully warmer temperatures.

More details: This program is offered for free thanks to our Star Party Program Sponsor, Marcellus Smiles. This program is designed for ages 8 and up. Space is limited and online pre-registration is required. The backup date will be May 4th

Forest Therapy Walk

Forest Therapy Walk

5/05/2024 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Experience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy, also known as “forest bathing,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest.

Extensive scientific research has found forest therapy walks to have numerous physical health benefits including activation of the ‘rest and restore’ parasympathetic nervous system, decreases to anxiety and depression, improving creativity, and much more. Your stress will peel away as your nervous system relaxes and you simply experience the medicine of the forest.

During this slow, mindful, and quiet walk, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses, release your mind chatter, and deepen connections to nature, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2.5 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks.

More details: This walk is designed for ages 14 and up. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. You will be notified ahead of the program on where to park and meet on the day of the walk. The walk will take place if it rains. In case cancellation is necessary due to dangerous conditions, you will be notified by email the morning of the walk.

Distinguished Speaker Series: Kate Clifford Larson at APT

5/09/2024 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

The SHM welcomes Kate Clifford Larson back to Auburn for this special event surrounding her book “Walk With Me: A Biography of Fannie Lou Hamer.” Born a century apart - one in slavery, the other in Jim Crow Mississippi - both Hamer and Harriet Tubman battled subjugation and racism to ensure equality and basic human and civil rights for all Americans. Fortified by family, faith, and community, both women inspired people to stand up and fight for justice and self-determination. Their lives and legacies are a testament to the soaring power of freedom that inspires leaders to rise up from the most unexpected places.

Literature and Nature Book Group Kick-Off with Todd Stregiel

5/11/2024 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Calling all nature-loving bookworms! The Literature & Nature Book Group at Baltimore Woods welcomes you to nourish and enhance your appreciation of the natural world with ongoing friendly discussions of great writing on that theme. Open to all interested adult members of the community, we will meet at the Interpretive Center (or outside if weather permits) one Saturday a month to delve into a reading of fiction or creative nonfiction chosen by participants.

Our kickoff meeting will take place on May 11 from 10:30 AM to Noon when we will be discussing Upstream by Mary Oliver. Copies will be made available on reserve at the Marcellus Free Library.

Discussion leader Todd Stregiel is thrilled to have an opportunity to join with others in the community by bringing together two of his abiding passions— reading good books and appreciating nature’s wonders. He is a Skaneateles native with a dedication to lifelong learning having made a career as a teacher in alternative and adult education settings. Todd’s wide range of interests include history, philosophy, nature photography, camping, and singing in a community choir.

Tsukamoto brings a blend of masterful fingerstyle guitar and evocative storytelling that transcends cultural barriers. His artistry, honed at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, has been celebrated on renowned stages like the Blue Note in NYC and the United Nations, and lauded for its “delicate, fluid, and beautifully detailed” style by Acoustic Guitar magazine.

Tsukamoto’s concerts are not just musical events; they are immersive experiences that weave lyrical narratives with intricate melodies. Recognized for his soulful performances that create an orchestra at his fingertips, he invites audiences into his world of musical exploration and emotional expression. This is a rare opportunity to witness a performer who has been celebrated for his ability to take listeners on an “impressionistic journey” (Boston Herald). Schumann A Major String Quartet, Op. 41 No. 3
Reena Esmail Saans
Suk Love Song
Franck Piano Quintet

From romantic passion to intense hatred, music is not only often inspired by, but also can elicit profound emotions. Robert Schumann’s Quartet in A Major, which opens with a sighing “Clara” motive in homage to his beloved bride, captures the composer’s affection, but also his extreme volatility. The soaring melodies of Reena Esmail’s Saans were composed as a wedding present for a friend—a celebration of love, but also testament to the deep relationship between friends. César Franck’s explosive Piano Quintet is a tumultuous expression of a range of emotions, which inspired not only numerous tales about the genesis and effect of the work, but also holds the listener in its impassioned thrall.

Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: Warblers and Amazing Neotropical Migrants

5/25/2024 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Baltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus, but instead, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature, including birds, butterflies, trees, flowers, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity, sit-spots and self-reflection, journaling and exploration, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors.

This is the fourth of 6 sessions which will be focused on “Warblers and our amazing neotropical migrants from Central and South America” at Bear Swamp State Forest along the south end of Skaneateles Lake.

More Details: This program is designed for ages 18 and up. Space is limited, online registration is required. To learn more about the overall program and guide Matt Young, visit baltimorewoods.org/nourishing-ourselves-through-nature/

Haydn String Quartet Op. 33 No. 5
Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8
Mendelssohn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44/1

Join the Brentano Quartet, hailed by the New York Times for their “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism” for a special concert celebrating musical contrasts. Revel in Joseph Haydn’s genial and energetic String Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5, which overwhelmingly brings warmth and light to mind. Darkness descends in the String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich; its dedication (“In memory of the victims of fascism and war”), somber, sometimes grating harmonies, and musical allusions (incorporating, for instance, “Dies irae” from the Catholic requiem mass) capture the pain and sorrow felt by its composer. Hope dawns, though, and brightness reigns in Felix Mendelssohn’s spirited String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1.

Beethoven Op. 76, “Harp”
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2
Georges Antoines Piano Quartet

Music making can be a balm, offering respite among sorrow and strife, and giving artists a way of expressing their pain or reacting to their circumstances. In music, composers may celebrate victories, lament the loss of friends, or find the metaphorical harmony and peace that eludes the larger world. Join resident GMF artists for an exploration of three composers whose lives and works were shaped by their experience of conflict. Written during the Napoleonic wars, Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet is a sparkling, lyrical reminder of joy, while Shostakovich’s Piano Trio, written as a memorial and replete with a danse macabre, dwells upon the tragic. Georges Antoine’s Piano Quartet, emerging from the trenches of World War I, is a passionate testament to a musical career cut short.

Enchanting music that promises to resonate long after the final note is played.
